This exercise is an important part of the emotional efficacy programme. It helps you to practice awareness of sensations, feelings and urges and to watch your thoughts. The practice of mindful acceptance helps you to observe and accept emotions rather than immediately reacting to them. It doesn’t matter what ‘mood’ you are in and whether or not an intense emotion is activated. Daily practice in all kinds of emotional states will strengthen your capacity to use mindful acceptance when you are feeling activated, distressed or emotionally triggered.
The main benefits of practising emotional acceptance are:
- It can help you to tolerate pain without acting on it.
- It can help you to recover more quickly from distressing and triggering situations.
- It can help you to find the space you need to choose your own response to the pain thoughtfully and consciously.
